Overview

As an of counsel attorney, Jonathan maintains a close, regular, personal relationship with Phillips & Bathke, P.C. and assists its clients with copyright, trademark, patent, and litigation matters.

Before founding the Law Office of Jonathan Francis, Jonathan was part of litigation teams at major law firms handling pharmaceutical patent disputes, false advertising cases, healthcare law matters, and antitrust defense. That experience — working alongside seasoned litigators on complex, high-stakes matters — shapes how he approaches every client engagement today.

Jonathan is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office and focuses his practice on trademark registration and enforcement, copyright infringement defense, and civil litigation in Illinois courts. He works of counsel with Phillips & Bathke, P.C., a firm with an established track record in complex IP litigation. He is a member of the Illinois State Bar Association’s Intellectual Property Law Section Council.

Trademark & IP

Jonathan helps Chicago businesses and entrepreneurs register, protect, and enforce their trademarks. Whether you’re launching a brand and want to do it right, or someone is infringing on rights you’ve already built, he brings a litigator’s instincts to trademark work — not just paperwork.

Copyright Infringement Defense

If you’ve received a demand letter or been sued by a copyright plaintiff — including serial litigants like Strike 3 Holdings or Joe Hand Promotions — Jonathan offers flat-fee defense representation. These cases are stressful and often feel overwhelming. They don’t have to be.

Civil Litigation

Jonathan handles business disputes and civil litigation matters in Cook County and Illinois state courts. He brings big-firm litigation experience to clients who want serious representation without the big-firm overhead.

Jonathan’s first clients came from Chicago’s comedy community — writers, performers, and producers who needed someone to think carefully about fair use, parody, and creative rights. That community taught him something he hasn’t forgotten: smart, creative people deserve smart legal counsel, and they shouldn’t have to overpay for it.

Jonathan is admitted to practice in Illinois and is based in Chicago’s Loop, in the historic Monadnock Building.Bar Admissions
